Hello Class!
For my MBDC Brochure Im trying to develop an asymmetrical transitional grid, after viewing other brochures on Bing images. If anyone has any suggestions or pointers that would help make the layout look better, please speak up. I'm thinking on placing A drop shadow on the Green element, as well placing A watermark of my logo on the first page.
I also need suggestions for my inforgrapgh for A Sixth label. Remember that my Target Audience points towards Automotive Sustainability towards Ford and possibly General Motors.

Keenan – it’s nice to see that you are progressing with this layout! Some suggestions:
ReplyDeleteCover – I’m not sure the brown background is working to your advantage here… it seems to conflict with your photo and overwhelm it a bit. I suggest you use white instead and a color for the small tag line text.
I still think the arrow element, as nice as it is, is too large for the letters. Have you reduced it? If so, try it even smaller.
Spread 2/3 – I think the blue background is dulling this too much. Again, leave the page white - I really think when you are designing for adults, with the clean UX design styles that are the contemporary trend, you do not need to flood the page with color. That is an approach that is common for younger children, not adults.
I am curious about the green circular shapes with brown strokes on each facing page? Why are they there? What do they add to the content? Maybe if they were filled with a photo – that might make more sense. Why don’t you draw them again (they aren’t quite symmetrical ellipses – but just close enough to make these look a bit “off”) and then use them as photo frames – to hole your photo. Eliminate the competing ellipse-shaped smaller photo – and if you want additional smaller photos, then use rectangles – as a counter point.
Please eliminate the brown vertical lines (3) that move down the center of these 2 pages. No can do – this is the gutter, where elements disappear into the binding of the magazine!
Look carefully at your bulleted list and set it up to be in a readable, straightforward way. This is not the kind of element that can appear in a circle.
Lastly – you need to increase your bottom margin so that you can place your page folio near the outside edge at the bottom of each page. (Might need to be white for contrast to the photo, and released from the master page so it can be brought forward.
Spread 4/5 – Please simplify the background as I’ve mentioned above, and place a photo in that green shape on the left. I can see that you have not attended, yet, to the bulleted list under Levels of Achievement. Why not use a 2 column grid there?
Infographic – nice icons, but where is the data? You will need to find some real numbers for your infographic.
Looking forward to seeing your changes this week.
Keenan,
ReplyDeleteYou've made a lot of progress with your design! However, I feel like it's almost too colorful. The white background instead of the blue like Coni said is a good suggestion. But the red you've chosen kind of confused my eye, I can't seem to tell if it's a red maroon or a brown. It could be because it's contrasting with the green or just because it's really close to both colors.
One other thing is that I noticed you changed the colors of your logo on you 2-3 spread. I'm not sure if that's a good idea considering the client will have seen it on the from cover as something different. Also, I don't think you even need to put the logo in that spot if you put it in the brochure at all (besides the cover) I just feel like the client will know it's mbdc as long as it's on the cover.
Keenan,
ReplyDeleteI agree with Nicole that your design has really come a long way and made some major progress! I do think however, that your colors for these pages are all too dominant. You defnitiey need some type of neutral to balance these colors out. They are much too strong together. I really like the improvement of the logo, but I agree with Coni that the size should be reduced because it is a little too heavy right now. Your infograph looks nice, but are you planning on adding it to your pages? It would be nice to see how you're going to incorporate it into your page design. You have some nice hierarchy with your titles of the pages. On the 4-5 spread however, on page 5 the title "Certification" I would left align that because our eyes might travel across the whole page and read both the titles (certification & eligibility) together. Plus our eyes usually start on the upper left hand corner so we want them to be directed in that direction. I'm not sure I would use the ellipses for the shapes because they feel a bit odd. I feel that the perfect circle shape would work better here because it reminds me of tires or other rounded car parts, which I think would make sense with your auto industry concept. Overall great progress, looking forward to seeing this move forward.
