Farns_Design Brief (week 4)

Overview:

The McDonough Bruguart Design Chemistry is an organization, which develops sustainable energy by cleaning out waste. Their process is by using Cradle to Cradle, A bio-mimetic system that recycles valuable nutrients in order to produce efficient Green energy, though eco-friendly though  material health, material re-utilization, energy, water and social fairness considerations.  . The organization is led by architecture William McDonough and Chemist Michael Bruguart.

Problem:

Since the early 1990s most car industries in America, has been trying to reduce municipal or regional water supplies by 40 percent. Unlike Natural gas, Fords been producing membrane reactors to  biological membrane reactors, to remain “water neutral” even while increasing production by 60 percent each year. They are now delivering the technologies and lessons learned from Hermosillo to other operations globally.  Also, like Tractor trailers, most domestic vehicles produces also of CO2 emissions that's dissolving Earth's Ozone Layer. This is whats effecting polar ice caps, which can lead up to  moderate sea level rising in the course of the next few decades.

Nicole - Design Brief & Images

Design Brief

Audience:

The audience my brochure will be targeting are CEO’s of large pulp mills. The CEO of any business are usually the ones to make big decisions, especially when it comes to a different way of doing things. They will also know what’s best for their company and have an open mind to “going green” whether it be their product itself or their factories. CEO’s know that Individuals as well as other companies feel better when they buy materials from places that want to help the earth, simply because they believe it will also help reduce pollution. So this product could potentially make them more money, while they reverse their carbon footprint.

Knowledge:

A pulp mill is a factory that converts wood chips into thick fibre boards, which is then shipped to a paper mill where they can do what they please with it. Pulp mills are highly pollutant to the air, water and land. These fibre boards can be manufactured using mechanical, semi-chemical or fully chemical methods and can be bleached or non-bleached; based on what the customer wants. Wood and other materials used to make pulp contain three main components besides water: Cellulose fibers that are desired in paper making, lignin which is a three-dimensional polymer that binds the cellulose fibers together, and hemicelluloses which are shorter branches of carbohydrate polymers.

Mechanical pulp mills: There are four types of pulp made by these mills. Stone ground-wood pulp is ground with stones embedded with silicon carbide or aluminum oxide. Pressure grounded pulp is wood ground in a pressurized sealed grinder. Refiner mechanical pulp is simply wood chips ground with metal plates. Lastly, thermo-mechanical pulp is when wood chips get steamed while they are ground. These mechanical mills use high levels of energy, mostly electricity.

Chemical pulp mills: These mills use processes called the kraft process and the sulfite process in order to remove most of the hemicellulose and lignin from the wood chips. The kraft process does less damage to the wood which makes the fibers stronger than the ones that are treated with sulfite. The sulfite process however, makes the fibers in wood chips easier to bleach. These processes use a combination of high temperature and alkaline or acidic chemicals to break lignin bonds. This process creates a high volume of chemical fumes, as well as high levels of energy to keep high temperatures going.

Chemical-mechanical pulp mills: In chemical mills, they pretreat wood chips with harsh chemicals. The conditions of the chemical treatment in these mills are much less harsh because they use lower temperatures, shorter times and less extreme pH level because the goal is to make the fibers easier to refine. Pulps made using these hybrid processes are known as chemi-thermomechanical pulps. These mills use equal amounts of chemicals and energy levels, however they are still bad for the environment.

Plan:

The plan is to help these factories as a whole, go green. Between the three types of mills, they all use a lot of energy, chemicals and water for their processes. MBDC will lower the amount of chemical usage by finding a way to break down the hard fibers in wood chips with a natural material that will in turn make the pulp itself less pollutant to the environment. These mills will have their own energy built by generating it with solar panels and/or wind turbines. As for water, they will install a water treatment plan so that no water leaves or gets reused improperly.

Cinelli_Mattel Toy Company Design Brief

Elizabeth Cinelli-Graham
Mattel Toy company

Toys are not only to play with, but they are to help infants, babies, toddlers, and children learn, hand-eye coordination, the difference between textures, colors, basic sounds and vowels. They are branded with some of the most lovable Disney characters, and provide numerous hours of entertainment, but not all toys are safe, and this is because of the use of hazardous chemicals that are being used to create them such as lead paint.

With that being said I chose my targets audience Mattel’s CEO and manufacturers. Although they do not make toys for infants, they are one of the biggest toy companies around and was also one of the most successful, until a hazardous chemical was found in a mass production of toys. Back in August of 2007 there a recall of 19 billion toys ranging from the all time favorite Barbie, to Hot wheels, and Pixar’s Car toys where recalled because they were tainted with lead paint.
I think that MBDC would be very helpful to Mattel, because with their knowledge and products that are eco friendly, they could help Mattel find a new Paint vendor, because the current vendor was providing the manufactures with ‘bad’ paint.
I plan to use a two column grid for this news letter, because I feel like CEO’s would have a easier time reading the text,  the more information the better, CEO’s like facts and I feel with two columns there’s more room to provide more text, and it also provides a good amount of negative space for images, and, possibly even side bars. The images that I provided before only really relate to MBDC, and the environment, I found these images that  relate to Mattel as a company, but can be related to being environment friendly. My color pallet I’m still working on because Mattel’s logo color is red and white, and I was going to use green, and red but it would appear to be more like a Holiday season news letter rather than a environmental news letter, so I’m still unsure how I’m going set up my color pallet. Any Suggestions?

Eleni-MBDC Design Brief & Photos

Here I have my design brief describing the client, the problem, the target audience, and the plan or solution.

Here are my additional photos

Ophelia_Week 3_Design Brief & Photo Research

Design Brief

Brief:
MBDC is a global sustainability consulting and product certification firm founded in 1995 by world-renowned architect William McDonough and chemist Dr. Michael Braungart. MBDC consults clients on leaving a "positive footprint" on the planet by implementing the Cradle to Cradle Framework. MBDC works with innovative clients within various sectors and industries, to spur creativity, differentiate their brands and recognize their market leadership, attract and retain customers, enhance competitive advantage, and reduce long-term risks.

Problem:
Some brands of school pencils, color pencils, cardboard, notebooks, copy paper, and filler paper come directly from rain forests in Indonesia, temperate Boreal forests in Canada, and other sensitive ecosystems. Many companies making these products are destroying ancient forests and the livelihoods of local communities.

Objective:
MBDC created the Cradle to Cradle Certified program to help school supplies companies measure their progress and communicate their accomplishments. MBDC could work with companies to evaluate their products and guide them through the process. Cradle to Cradle certification program assesses a school product's safety to children and the environment and design for future life cycles.

Target Market:
Paper Mate
Five Star
Mead
Ticonderoga
RoseArt
Faber-Castell

Farns_(My Target Audience: Transportation) 5 Photos

The Target audience Ive chosen will be within an automotive industry. To make MBDC more inspirational, I figure it could develop more safer cars, by recycling old ones from junkyards. Towards cars and other road-like transportation's period, im the type of person who wants to develop safer vehicles, by creating energy efficient motors. (possibly without gasoline). Im not so certain how the recycling gets produce in transportation industries, but using the Cradle to Cradle effect, im sure certain devices will produce Green Energy

Target Audiance:
General Moters
Volvo

Targeted company
Sprout: The vision of Sprout World is to help reduce the world’s use of resources and be an active advocate for issues surrounding sustainability – in terms of production, green consumer products and business. They also aim to work actively to promote respect for the environment via the constant development of sustainable consumer products. Sprout seeks to become a world leader in the area of green, sustainable consumer products. The mission of Sprout World is, that they want Sprout products, in a straightforward and comprehensible way, to help make it easier to understand what sustainability is all about. We would like to contribute to greater awareness of, and education about sustainability. They do this through strategic partnerships with national and international educational institutions.

I know about this company is because of the sprout pencil in a lovely store, and I very like their ideas of recycle and functional. I think this company has similar idea with MBDC, and they could build up great partnership with each other. Sprout has 4 major products: pencils, color pencils, tiny gardens, and sprout cards. Therefore I found the 5 photos related to these 4 products.
