Eleni-MBDC Pages 4-5 Spread

Here is my 4-5 spread so far. I have the dripping paint running across the page and decided to include my first infograph since it matched with the paint quite well. Since I have pretty wide margins, I had enough negative space on the left to include a sidebar and balance out the page with the hand infograph. I tried putting a light blue hue behind the text of the sidebar to unify with the monochromatic theme of the page, but I'm not sure if it should be lighter maybe? I also included a background image of a wooden wall/floor to show that "interior" feel since I am also appealing towards interior designers. I tried to give it the feel that the paint is painting the room. I wanted to keep it white for the simplicity but I felt the texture gave it a more intriguing appeal. Let me know what you guys think!

  1. Eleni – The side bar seems to be overly heavy and dense compared to the rest of the body copy. Sidebars are meant to be read only after, or in addition to, the main section of text. I think the space you have for this element is not enough to use the whole sidebar. I would either use the top section OR the list at the bottom but not both. There simply isn’t room. The other option is to use a photo here, or use the information about the book Cradle to Cradle with its small photo. After you reduce the amount of text, consider restyling this in a way that will lighten up this element… not so heavy on the page. Increase leading, decrease use of bold? Also… the type seems to be sitting just a tad too close to the trim edge.

  2. Eleni,
I'd like to say that I'm glad you decided to use the background you were debating about in class last week. I think it gives this spread a good sense of dimension as well as a better sense of where the paint is dripping from. I do agree with Coni on the sidebar. It is much more dominant than the body copy so I feel like it will be read before the actual information.
